We all know that, one day, solar batteries will power our cars - but not yet! Well, there may be a replacement technology - fuel cells. Fuel cell innovators are receiving truckloads of investment dollars; Ballard Power, Plug Power Systems and Fuel Cell Energy to name a few. They are developing fuel cells that produce electricity via chemical reactions; extract hydrogen from natural gas - pass it through a membrane while converting it to electricity.

Fuel Cell, Source: Ballard Power

The idea is old but the application now workable, with NASA space technology. Plug Power(Nasdaq:PLUG) has received the most press while supported by Detroit Edison. Its goal - fuel cells for the home. Ballard Power System(Nasdaq:BLDP) is driving portable fuel cells for cars. Fuel Cell Energy (AMEX:FCL) claims to use natural gas, methanol, ethanol and methane to create power; now that should help with farm waste. Who says cows can’t fly! They are building an actual 250-kilowatt plant in Alabama to be tested by the local Mercedes plant.

In conjunction with fuel cells is micro-engineering. Seen those Japanese robots that fetch your slippers and vacuum the house? OK! How about a microjet engine? The electrical industry is excited about energy from micro turbines or fuel cells or both to distribute lots of energy. Sounds so good the utility industry and their investment friends are all doing high 5s and touting the stocks. Possibilities - yes, bet the farm - not yet!

BiometricLastly biometrics, the science of identity acknowledgment based on physical characteristics like fingerprints, eye scans, etc. This may be the answer to gun control, some think. Only the legitimate user can fire the weapon via biometrics, novel idea. Biometrics will be used instead of credit cards and keys, the developers say. That’s good news for those of us who carry too many of both.

The future! Lots to look forward to!
